School of Mathematics and Physics
The School of Mathematics and Physics is an important teaching and research base for mathematics and physics, which offers the 2 undergraduate programs: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and Applied Physics. The school fosters 4 teaching and research sections, namely Mathematics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, and Advanced Mathematics, 1 laboratory center for physics and 2 institutes (one for Applied Mathematics and one for Functional Material and Devices). Among its 66 faculty members, 24 are professors or associate professors. Over 90% of them have obtained their doctoral or master’s degrees. Many of them have been visitor scholars in USA, UK, South Korea and Singapore. The high quality of our teaching staff lays a solid foundation for the school’s further development.
The school attaches great attention to teaching, so many courses are listed as the First-class Courses by ZUA. The two courses, Advanced Mathematics and Probability and Mathematical Statistics are listed as the outstanding courses at the provincial level. Through teaching reform, the school has yielded great fruits in teaching. Our students have obtained various prizes in such contests as the National Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and the Chinese Mathematics Competitions. Our teachers have also won remarkable honors at the provincial and university levels, such as the title of Academic Leader in Henan Province, the Outstanding Teacher in Henan Province and the Outstanding Teacher in ZUA.
In scientific research, the school sticks to a principle that places teaching in the first place and uses research to promote teaching. Hence, it takes an active role in academic exchanges home and abroad. In the recent 5 years, the school has undertaken 6 National Natural Science Foundation Projects and more than 30 other projects at the ministerial and provincial levels. Our teachers have published 12 monographs and textbooks, and over 100 papers.
In accordance with our great advantage of our big staff-student ratio, our school designs a special program for talents cultivation in order to organize teaching procedures more carefully, and to strengthen students’ professional skills and humanistic qualities. We have devised special management systems to guide and facilitate our students both in study and in life, such as the Instructor System, and the Dormitory Mentor system. All these help to strengthen the teacher-student relationship and are warmly welcomed by our students. The school highlights the procedure of practical teaching and students’ plan of pursuing further education. By expanding our Physics Laboratory Center and constructing the Applied Physics Lab, the school has obtained financial funds worth more than 4 million yuan. This not only promotes the foundation of the school’s research platform, but also enables our students to do experiments in the lab and hence facilitates their theoretical learning. Based on this, our students have won tremendous honors, such as being enrolled in the National Innovation Training Program, winning ZUA’s Technology Innovation Fund for Student and Second Prize for Challenge Cup. Each year, many of our graduates are admitted by top universities and research institutes in China like Tongji University and National Center for Nanoscience and Technology.
